Clarification on IS 14397:1996 for E. coli O157 in Accredited Scope

Withdrawal of IS 14397:1996:

The method IS 14397:1996, previously specified for the detection, isolation, and identification of pathogenic E. coli in food, including E. coli O157 and Vero/Shiga toxin-producing strains under Appendix B of the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, has been withdrawn.

Replacement by ISO 16654:2001:

IS 14397:1996 will be replaced by ISO 16654:2001 (with Amendments 1:2017 and 2:2023), which outlines a horizontal method for the detection of E. coli O157 in food and animal feed.

Laboratory Accreditation Update:

As per the FSSAI order dated 20.08.2024, laboratories must update their accredited scope to include the ISO 16654:2001 method within six months if it has not already been incorporated during the current accreditation cycle. IS 14397:1996 remains valid until February 2025.

Incorporation in Manual:

This updated method will be included in the forthcoming edition of the "Manual on Methods of Analysis - Microbiological Examination of Food and Water" and will be released shortly.
