Update on BIS Standard IS 14397:1996

In the realm of food safety standards, it's crucial to stay abreast of any modifications or withdrawals to ensure the continued reliability of testing procedures. One such update pertains to the Indian Standard IS 14397:1996, specifically focused on the detection, isolation, and identification of pathogenic E. coli in food.

As of the latest information available, IS 14397:1996 has been officially withdrawn by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

With the withdrawal of IS 14397:1996, it becomes imperative for stakeholders, laboratories, and professionals involved in food safety to be aware of alternative methods that can effectively replace the outdated standard. In this regard, ISO 16654:2001 is a suitable alternative.

ISO 16654:2001 - Microbiology of Food and Animal Feeding Stuffs - Horizontal Method for the Detection of Escherichia coli O157

This international standard provides a horizontal method specifically designed for the detection of Escherichia coli O157, a strain known for its pathogenic potential. ISO 16654:2001 offers a comprehensive approach to microbiological testing in food and animal feeding stuffs, aligning with global standards for quality and safety.
